Barrington High School boasts AD of the year

Rhode Island Interscholastic League honors George Finn

Posted

Last Thursday, it did not rain. That was good news for George Finn.

Why? Well, if it had rained, Mr. Finn would likely have missed a special event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, where he received the Rhode Island Interscholastic League's Athletic Director of the Year Award.

"As long as it wasn't raining, it was going to be a good day," he said. "If it was raining, I'd be working."

Each spring season — this one included — presents certain challenges to the Barrington High School Director of Athletics. Snow-covered fields, relentless spring showers, and rain-soaked fields can wreak havoc with an outdoor sports schedule.

When the weather turns south, Mr. Finn sprints into high gear, postponing games and juggling the gym schedule to accommodate practices for sports teams.

The longtime Barrington High School administrator said each season has its challenges, but there are also plenty of rewards when helping young athletes follow their dreams.

He also brushed off much of the praise that he received last week. Mr. Finn said there are many people who help Barrington High School athletics succeed — from the administrators at the school to the coaches, to the boys and girls who fill the Eagles' rosters.

"I look at this as a school award," he said. "We need everyone else to make this work. It's a team effort, and that not a cliché. It's the truth."

Mr. Finn arrived at Barrington High School in 1999, after spending six years at Bates College as the director of sports medicine and assistant director of athletics. In addition to being named director of athletics at Barrington High School, he also filled the role of director of student activities.

Barrington High School Principal Joe Hurley said Mr. Finn plays a key role in helping BHS run smoothly.

"He does so much for our school and the community," said Mr. Hurley.

"He puts in a tremendous amount of time for each sport. He does an outstanding job."

This is not the first time Mr. Finn has been recognized for his work at the school. In 2004, he was named Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Athletic Director of the Year, and in 2015, he earned the State Award of Merit from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

In addition to his duties at the high school, he also serves as RIIL's sports director for boys' and girls' lacrosse, is the chairman of the RIIL Sports Medecine Committee, served on the Department' of Health's Board of Athletic Trainers, and is a member of the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Executive Board.

Mr. Finn said his professional successes would not have been possible, if not for the support of his wife, Jacqui, and their sons, Matthew and Christopher. His family attended last Thursday's banquet.

"The support of my family has been very important," he added.
