Barrington High School's 'Birdcage' planning fund-raiser

'Spring Fling for ALS' will take place on May 5

Barrington High School seniors Ian Coyne and Tommy Murray took cheering to a new level with their senior project.

The two local students have been running the student section — called "The Birdcage" — at Barrington High School.

"Over the course of the year we have used the student section to raise money for different organizations," said Ian, adding that one of the fund-raisers was a doughnut-eating contest that benefitted Special Olympics.

Ian and Tommy are planning another fund-raiser for May 5. That is when "The Birdcage" will host "Spring Fling for ALS" — an ice bucket challenge, which will raise awareness and money to fight ALS. The event will serve as a finale for their senior project.

The two Barrington High School seniors have arranged to have a special guest speaker, John Frates, whose son was diagnosed with ALS. Pete Frates helped create the ice bucket challenge.

The "Spring Fling for ALS" will be held from 4:30 to 7 at Barrington High School.
