Junior Varsity and Unlimited teams remain undefeated

Posted

The Barrington Pop Warner Unlimited and Junior Varsity football teams pushed their records to 2-0 after wins this weekend. The Unlimited team knocked off Southcoast 27-0, while the Junior Varsity squad beat Dartmouth 36-6. The Junior Pee Wees also grabbed a victory, defeating Dartmouth 13-0.

Junior Pee Wees

The Linen & Concrete Barrington Junior Pee Wees powered past Dartmouth, 13-0, on Sunday morning.

On the first play of the game Charlie Potter and Kevin Robison tackled the Dartmouth running back for a four yard loss. The first half proved to be a defensive battle. Barrington let up only one Dartmouth first down.

Key tackles were made by Luca Marino, Jake Ignall, Kurt Donecker, Chuckie Potter and AJ DiOrio. Owen Willard made a play when he shook off two blockers to sack the Dartmouth QB for an 11 yard loss. On another defensive play Luca Marino stripped the ball from the Dartmouth running back and ran for 6 yards.

Barrington’s offensive drove the ball into the red zone three times, but couldn’t punch it in for a score. On the second play of second half Chuckie Potter scored a touchdown on a 65-yard run, thanks to key blocks by Kurt Donecker, Troy Van Ness, AJ Diorio, and Ben Martel. Mitchell Ivatts ran in the extra point.

In the fourth quarter Barrington’s offense drove down the field to score another touchdown. Chuckie Potter scored his second touchdown of the day from 9 yards out thanks to key blocks from Aimon Bickford and Troy Van Ness. AJ DiOrio and Mitchell Ivatts had some nice runs on this scoring drive.

Barrington’s defense played solid in the second half, again letting up only one first down. Jake Ignall recovered a fumble on defense to give the ball back to Barrington one more time. Barrington drove down the field one last time as the clock expired. Also, Brady Fisher had over 50 yards on punt returns on the day.

Unlimited

The Barrington Unlimited Team moved to 2-0 with another dominant performance, beating Southcoast 27-0. The aggressive Eagle defense gave up only one first down and remains unscored-upon.

The Eagles kicked off and pinned the home team deep on a strong kick by Thomas McAdamas. Jack Murphy hustled down to stop the returner cold with a sound hit. Evan Van Bree and Quinn Gaffney stuffed the first down run for minus two. Linebackers Cole Glazzard and Luke Gorham and a host of Eagles stopped a second fullback dive for a short gain.

On third and long, the Southcoast QB rolled right and was pressured by AJ Prete and Tommy Rocha, forcing him to throw an incomplete. The Eagles took the punt at their own 25.  On first down in shotgun formation, QB Brigham Dunphy changed the play from a pass to a sweep and unleashed Mark Bernardo around left end. He picked up a great block by Brett Hoder, juked the cornerback and outran the pursuing defenders for a 75-yard touchdown.

On the ensuing kick, Murphy once again made the stop. The defense, led by Josh Nutter dominating the middle of the line, forced another 3 and out. A weak punt left the Eagles in Southcoast territory.  The Eagles took over with the multifaceted Cole Reed at the helm. He handed off to Gorham on a jet sweep left for seven.

A poor second down play and a third down incompletion left the Eagles in fourth and 8. Reed faked to Gorham and handed off to Bernardo on reverse right; Bernardo cut up-field behind a key block by Marley Karnes and sliced for the first inside the 20. Gorham went left behind Lukas Mendonca and Hoder for eight, setting up a fullback dive to Glazzard. Glazzard followed a big push by Nutter and Prete, took on several Southcoast defenders at the 10 and bulled his way into the endzone as his Eagle teammates rallied around him, moving the pile for six.

The second quarter began with Southcoast in possession on their on 30. On 2nd down the QB attempted a pass deep down the right seam, Dunphy stepped in front and picked the ball off. He returned it nine yards to the 35 yardline. The Eagles wasted little time and handed off to Barnardo right. Jack Kelleher and Mike Cox made great blocks. Bernardo got outside and picked up a key block from Gorham and Gaffney and cruised for his fourth TD of the season. Glazzard hit the 2 point kick and the Eagles went up 20 to zip. Southcoast started a short drive with time winding down in the half, but the drive was foiled on third and four by d-tackle Sergio DaSilva’s tackle for loss.

To start the second half the Eagles went three and out and were forced to punt. Declan Cooke, standing on his own 30, stepped in and launched a booming punt down to the opposite 15 yard line. Van Bree and DaSilva remained active, hampering the Southcoast running game.

On a big third down play, linebacker Mike Cox spearheaded a big stop short of the first down. The possession went over to the Eagles. Reed at QB hit tight end Karnes for a first down.  Karnes ran for five after the catch.  Cooke then swept left, got an Aiden Keenan block, broke a tackle and picked up another first down. Rocha took a handoff behind Spenser Thys and made a bruising run breaking two tackles.

Runs by McAdams and Murphy put the Eagles inside the 10. Gorham went left behind solid blocking of Cox and Kelleher and scored his second TD of the season.

In the 4th quarter the Eagles solid defense continued and on offense they began to eat up the clock with hard running by Rocha and Reed. With time running out, Southcoast completed a long pass that looked certain to go for a TD, when the speed of Thys showed itself. In the open field, Thys ran down the receiver and dragged him down from behind.

In the post game press conference, Director of Football Operations, Rob Phillips had this to say: "Glazzard and our linebackers made plays all over the field. The o-line led by Nutter and Hoder exerted their will. It was a good team effort. This victory was the result of good competitive team play. We made some mistakes and next week we all need to get better. We are on to next week’s opponent, Trumbull Connecticut.”

Junior Varsity

The Bagels Etc sponsored Junior Varsity Pop Warner team improved to 2-0 with a 36-6 win over the Dartmouth Indians.

Scotty Gausland opened up the scoring when he took an option pitch from Jax Gorman and sprinted 55 yards for a touchdown (Sanchez kick). The defense shut down the Indians and recorded a safety behind tackles from Dante Salvaggio, Ethan Tomulonis and Garrett Lepore.

When Barrington got the ball back, Gorman hit Willy Sanchez in the flat and he took it 35 yards in for a score (Sanchez kick). Dave Raposa, Matt Daft and Conner Nelson were in on tackles in the Indians' backfield on the next series.

The Eagles marched right back down the field on their next possession. On first and goal Gorman kept it on an option from eight yards out to make it 24-6.

Jack Kelty picked off a pass on the next drive. Bryan Ivatts had several nice runs to move the Eagles down the field. Gorman then found James Anderson on a seam route in the end zone from 20 yards out for another score.

Andrew Jameison, Luke Wilcox and Jay Schieffelin were in on stops for the defense on the next series. The defense then recovered a fumble. With 18 seconds before the half Gorman tossed a pass to Mike Uriati on a flag route from 25 yards out to make the score 36-6.

The Eagles play at Dighton Rehoboth next Saturday.

Pee Wees

Sunday the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pee Wee Eagles faced off against the Dartmouth Indians.

The Eagles defense came out strong including a quarterback sack by Christopher DeSisto. This gave our offense great field position. The offensive backs Joey Medeiros, Riley Greens, Luke McManaman and Ethan Hines proceeded to run the ball strong behind the offensive line of Devin Medeiros, Nolan Gaus, Adam Gravelle, Danny Lemos and Ryan Anderson eating up the field and clock at the same time.

As the first quarter was coming to an end Luke McManaman was able to run in for the first touchdown of the game. Our extra point pass from Ethan Hines to Joey Mederiors came up a little short.

After the proceeding kick off our defense made up of Evan Waite, Owen Lawson, Lucas Bianco, Parker Hughes, Adam Camille, Alexander Duffy, Ethan Hines, Joey Medeios, Luke McManaman, Riley Greene and Jet Cajigas were able to hold the Dartmouth Indians to a single touchdown.

At the half the score was 7-6. During the second quarter Barrington started off strong but came up short on the first drive. The Eagles then started to sustain a few injuries. This forced them to play some kids in new positions. At this point the Dartmouth Indians were able to take advantage and proceeded to store two more touchdowns, making the score 20-6.

Even with the injuries the boys kept their heads up and played hard even when they were in new positions.
