Barrington Junior Pee Wees roll over Islanders, 32-0

Eagles improve to 1-1

The Barrington Pop Warner Junior Pee Wees built a 20-0 halftime lead over the Middletown Islanders on Sunday and powered to a 32-0 victory.

The game, which was played at Tiverton High School in a steady rain, opened with a strong defensive stand by the Eagles. Barrington's Nate Reid met the Middletown fullback at the line of scrimmage and drove him backwards. On the next play, the Islanders coughed up the ball and Barrington players jumped on it.

The Eagles were unable to score on the ensuing drive, but the defense held again and forced a punt on fourth and long. Barrington's Chucky Potter let the ball bounce then scooped it up and broke for the sideline. He picked up a key block by Owen Willard and then sprinted the rest of the way to the end zone.

Barrington failed to convert the extra point but held a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Charly Potter, Mitch Ivatts, Jackson Warner, AJ DiOrio, Kurt Donecker, Willard, Finn White and Shea Parish combined for key stops on the Middletown running backs. After forcing a punt, Barrington took over possession again and Chucky Potter pushed the score to 12-0 after breaking free for a long touchdown run. The Eagles converted the extra point and held a 13-0 lead.

Barrington extended its lead to 20-0 by halftime and continued to roll in the second half. The Eagles' defense stymied the Islanders running game and forced a turnover in the fourth quarter. Ivatts scooped up the loose ball and sprinted untouched to the end zone.

Leading 26-0, Barrington's defense again came up with more key stops. And when the Eagles took over possession of the ball, it was Ivatts tossing a short pass to DiOrio in the flat, who pushed through the Islanders' defense for Barrington's fifth touchdown of the game.

Barrington improved to 1-1 with the victory, while Middletown dropped to 1-1. The Eagles will play at Dighton Rehoboth on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m.

Barrington's Junior Varsity team battled Middletown on Sunday, losing 20-6.
