Barrington JV volleyball team wins state championship

The Barrington High School girls' JV volleyball team won the Division II state championship for the second straight year.

The Eagles went undefeated in the regular season with a record of 16-0, giving them the number 1 seed from the North. North Smithfield was the number 2 seed from the North, followed by the number 3 seed Tolman. The South division was represented by number 1 East Greenwich (16-0), number 2 Westerly, number 3 West Warwick, number 4 Cranston East, and number 5 Cranston West.

The 8 teams were placed into 2 pools of 4 and Barrington was placed with Westerly and both teams from Cranston. BHS opened the day with Cranston East and was immediately put to the test winning 25-21 and 25-20. The sophomore serve-receive line up of Kaylee Feather, Courtney Howarth, and Lindsay Skadberg initiated the Eagles' attack that proved too much for the Bolts.

In the next round of pool play, BHS faced Cranston West. The Falcons brought even more pressure than the Bolts. At one point, the Falcons were serving game point 20-24 but with a solid serve receive and attack, the Eagles would sideout and served strong to close the 4 point deficit to 25-24. BHS would pull through 28-26 and 25-18 with consistent serving from sophomore Alex Ratteree and strong defense from middle blocker Vickie Mello and libero Kaylee Feather.

After about 75 minutes of rest, the number 2 seed from the south, Westerly Bulldogs, were the last hurdle for the Lady Eagles in pool play. Again with great ball control by the Eagles' Feather and sophomore setter Emilia Dell'Antonio, the Eagles dominated the Bulldogs 25-17 and 25-14.

After finishing pool play 6-0, the Eagles moved right into the semi finals to face a familiar opponent, the Lady Northmen, in a one game playoff to 25 points.

Strong serving and more consistent attacks were the challenge for the Eagles. However the Eagles were a much improved team as well. Both Lindsay Skadberg and Courtney Howarth defended the back row and provided smart attacks from the left side. The Lady Northmen found themselves outplayed and out-smarted and the Eagles would advance 25-20 to the state finals against East Greenwich.

"The 11 sophomores on the Eagles team were freshmen subs on last season's championship team and knew to win this tournament would take more than just serving and passing," wrote coach Christian Lambert. "They dedicated the last two weeks of the season to mentally prepare as well as develop a more sophisticated offense."

The Avengers were also 16-0 in the regular season and 6-0 in pool play.

"This was the match that everyone had predicted," wrote Lambert. "EG was eliminated by BHS in last year's tourney during the semi-finals so they were playing for redemption."

The Eagles came out strong in the first set. The positive energy and determination of the Eagles set the tone early and the Avengers couldn't keep up. Sophomore Julia Fortin dominated up front for the Eagles providing 3 strong kills during this match.

The Eagles won the first set 25-18. However, in the second set the Eagles made some untimely errors and the Avenger serve kept pressuring the Eagles and they would fall 22-25. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set, and the Avengers would never recover. Constant attacks from the back row, middle, and outside made it tough for the Avengers to play in their system and gave the Eagles free ball after free ball. The Eagles finished 15-9 and became the Division II JV champs for the second year in a row.

All-tournament awards went to Emiia Dell'Antonio and Alex Ratteree and the tournament MVP will awarded to Vickie Mello at the state banquet.
