Barrington market manager wins national award

Karen Medeiros named 'Shaw's Supermarket Woman Manager of the Year'

The manager of the Barrington Shaw's Supermarket was recently selected for a noteworthy honor.

Earlier this year, Karen Medeiros was named Shaw's Supermarket Woman Manager of the Year. Ms. Medeiros was selected from a group of 350 women's store managers across the country.

"I'm honored," she said, "highly honored."

Ms. Medeiros has worked for Shaw's for 48 years — she started at the Shaw's in Dartmouth, Mass., which used to be called Brockton Public Market. She was there for about 20 years and then became an assistant store director at a market in Fall River, Mass., and later worked for the company as a bakery specialist, traveling to a number of stores in the region.

Ms. Medeiros said she also served as a bakery buyer for the main office, but after a short time moved to the Barrington Shaw's where she was the manager.

"I was here for three years, then they asked me to go work at a Star Market in Boston," she said.

The Westport, Mass. resident eventually requested a transfer back to the Barrington Shaw's so that she could be closer to home. The company obliged and Ms. Medeiros began her second tour in town.

"They've been very good to me," she said, of Shaw's.

For the last three years, Ms. Medeiros has been the manager for Barrington Shaw's and has come to know many of the customers. She said each market presents its own set of challenges, but she and her workers do their best to fill each need in Barrington.

"We try to meet their expectations… most times we succeed," she said.

The recent award was based in part on the store manager's work with community engagement and community support. Ms. Medeiros and Barrington Shaw's have supported a number of local organizations, including youth sports leagues, schools and other nonprofits.

Wrote one customer in a recent email to the Times, "I’m very involved with the schools and she (Ms. Medeiros) never says no to anything I ask for. Never! We are so lucky to have her in this town."

Ms. Medeiros said she enjoys her work and being able to interact with the community.

"My background is in social work — I'm a people person," she said, adding that she likes making customers happy, and her store associates happy as well.

Ms. Medeiros said she occasionally gives out awards to her workers and treats them to lunch.

As part of winning the Shaw's Supermarket Woman Manager of the Year Award, the company flew Ms. Medeiros to Chicago for a special ceremony.
