It pays to be energy efficient.
Barrington Middle School has been selected for a Green Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education, a special honor acknowledging sustainability practices. The award is accompanied by a special financial prize, said Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore.
“There’s going to be a check awarded to us,” Messore said. The superintendent said he did not have the exact amount, but knew it was a substantial figure.
The award complements the financial savings already realized through the building’s energy efficiency. Barrington Middle School, built just a few years ago, is equipped with an array of energy efficiencies.
According to the district’s website, Barrington Middle School achieves a 40 percent energy savings above International Energy Efficiency Certificate 2009 baseline requirements.
Other sustainability distinctions:
• Landscaping around the school was developed using durable native plantings that flourish without heavy maintenance or irrigation.
• Stormwater runoff from the school site was reduced by using low impact development best management practices that include rain gardens and sand filters.
In addition, Barrington Middle School empowers students to take an active role in environmental literacy — there is a youth climate action group, and active participation in recycling and re-use.
Messore said there will be a special ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the middle school celebrating the Green Ribbon award.
The school also received a Green Ribbon award in 2021.
