Barrington defeats top-seeded LaSalle

The Barrington High School Mock Trial Team recently competed against LaSalle in a playoff match-up at the RI Traffic Tribunal.

The case involved cyber-bullying and the plaintiff was asking for $75,000 in monetary damages for the emotional distress suffered. The position of each team was determined by a coin flip 24 hours before the trial. LaSalle won the coin flip, and chose to be the defense while Barrington would be the plaintiff side.

Barrington had three mock trial lawyers — Anusha Bhatia, Josephine Kuo, and Emily Gorman — and the three witnesses, who were played by Violet Johnson, Lila Ackley and Elana Sheinkopf. Kelly Kaon was the rules expert for this trial.

The trial was very intense and the scores were close, but ultimately Barrington prevailed. Barrington entered the playoffs as the 16-seed while LaSalle was the top-ranked team in the state.

Barrington was slated to continue the playoffs with a competition against the winners of the 8-vs-9 seeds.

The BHS mock trial team is coached by Greg Carrara, and is led by junior co-captains Josephine Kuo and Emily Gorman.
