Barrington named a 'Tree City USA'

Designation is a result of 'commitment to effective urban forest management'

Barrington has long been known for its stellar public schools and its miles of beautiful coastline. Now it will also be known for its commitment to trees.

Earlier this month, the Arbor Day Foundation sent a letter of congratulations to the town for earning the title "Tree City USA." Nearly 3,500 communities across the country are name Tree Cities.

"As a result of your commitment to effective urban forest management, you already know that trees are vital to the public infrastructure of cities and towns throughout the country, providing numerous environmental, social and economic benefits," wrote Dan Lambe, president of Arbor Day Foundation. "In fact, trees are the one piece of community infrastructure that actually increases in value over time."

Barrington reportedly earned the designation by meeting the Arbor Day Foundation program's four requirements. The town has a tree board or tree department; there is tree-care ordinance in town; there is an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and the town also holds an Arbor Day observance or proclamation.

"Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community first hand," wrote Mr. Lambe. "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."
