Broken pipe forced closure; repairs almost complete

The Peck Center for Adult Enrichment in Barrington is nearing an anniversary: It has been almost a month since officials were forced to close the center because of a broken pipe.

But last week the director of the center said she was hoping to re-open the facility on Monday, March 2. Michele Gousie Geremia said the repairs to the Peck Center are underway — a floor in the kitchen was being installed and new cabinets hung. If work goes according to plan, Barrington senior citizens will be welcomed back to the center soon.

Officials closed the doors to the Peck Center for Adult Enrichment (formerly called the Barrington Senior Center) on Jan. 30. Workers in the kitchen had complained of water backing up in the sink, and officials later traced that problem to a broken pipe.

A construction crew dug a hole in the kitchen floor to access the pipe and eventually discovered that the cast iron pipe was eroded and falling apart. Officials planned to place a liner inside the old pipe. The work was expected to cost about $10,000.

Ms. Geremia said the Bayside Family YMCA has helped out during the center's closure.

"They stepped up and offered some space," she said.

Ms. Geremia also began offering a few programs in the back studio at the center — mah jongg and a class on meditation.
