Barrington Police Chief John LaCross is reminding residents to clear the snow from their sidewalks following the snowstorm.

Town law states that any business or resident whose property has a sidewalk is required to clear snow from that sidewalk by 6 p.m. on the day following the storm. Failure to comply with the law could result in a $50 fine. Town officials have said this is a safety issue — pedestrians are put in harm's way when they are forced to walk in the roadway if sidewalks are not cleared.

Following a snowstorm in February, the town manager issued warnings to six businesses in the center of town. Town Manager Jim Cunha said businesses were not the only ones failing to follow the law after that storm. He said there are numerous residents along New Meadow Road, in Country Club plat, and along Maple Avenue, who did not clear snow off their sidewalks following last week's storms.

"I've heard some complaints from people," Mr. Cunha said.

Anyone who is physically unable to clear the snow and unable to pay for someone else to clear it, may contact the Barrington DPW at 247-1907 to request assistance from the town.
