Barrington police put an end to potato cannon party

You've heard of people firing off fireworks on the Fourth of July, but how about potatoes?

It seems some folks on Appian Way in Barrington caught the attention of their neighbors — and later the police — when they began loading spuds into a potato cannon and blasting them out toward Narragansett Bay.

The potato cannon, or "spud gun" as it is sometimes known, uses air pressure or the combustion of a flammable gas to blast out objects … usually potatoes. According to some websites, the potato cannons can be dangerous.

The neighbors to the potato cannon posse called the Barrington Police Department at 7:38 p.m. and alerted officers to the situation. The neighbors were reportedly concerned that the launched potatoes could hit boaters on the bay.

Police officers responded to the residence in question and told the group that firing a potato gun violated a town ordinance. The residents reportedly agreed to stop shooting the cannon.
