Barrington Police news: Raccoon spoils trap set for groundhog

Also, Mathewson Road resident calls about unwanted free couch

Barrington Police responded to a number of calls last week, including one for a resident who went looking for a groundhog but instead found a raccoon.

On Friday, Dec. 29, a North Lake Drive resident called police after he mistakenly caught a raccoon in a live trap. The resident told police he was trying to trap a groundhog that had been frequenting his garden. The resident said he planned to later release the raccoon near the Four Town Farm property. Police contacted DEM about the raccoon. A DEM officer responded to the North Lake Drive residence and released the raccoon from the trap.

That same day, a Mathewson Road resident called police after he spotted a man driving a white pickup truck stop in the area of Mathewson Road and Anchorage Way and drop off a couch on the side of the road. Police responded to the scene and found the couch — police said it was a small brown couch and a “free” sign was taped onto it. Police notified the DPW about the couch and asked that it be removed.

A few days earlier, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, a Bay Spring Avenue resident called 911 to report an accident. The resident said he heard a loud bang and went outside and found that a vehicle had struck and damaged his fence. The resident told police he found tire marks on the pavement near the fence. Police responded to the residence and located a possible suspect vehicle, but later realized it was not the vehicle responsible for the damage.

On Saturday, Dec. 30, a man called Barrington Police to report some of his belongings were stolen while he was walking on the beach. The man told police he had left his jacket, gloves and hat on the beach near the RISD property and gone for a walk. When he returned, the items were missing, police said. Police plan to check the surveillance footage from the RISD entrance gate.
