Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said a local homeowner may be arrested following a large underage party on Saturday night, March 24.
Police said more than two dozen teenagers were found inside a home on St. Andrew's Way. Police said the home smelled strongly of marijuana and alcohol.
Police charged a 17-year-old Barrington boy with possession of alcoholic beverage-underage person, and are considering filing a Social Host charge against the female homeowner, who was inside the house during the party.
"Based on the totality of the case and the number of kids in there, that adult inside should have known" what was going on, said Chief LaCross. "This may lead to charges."
Police received a 911 hangup call from the home at about 11 p.m. on Saturday and responded to the residence. At the scene, officers discovered cars filling the driveway, parked on the sides of the street and in a nearby preschool's parking lot.
An officer found a teenage girl outside the home and asked her if she had called 911 and if she was OK. The girl allegedly told the officer no one called 911 and that she was fine. She then ignored the officer's additional questions.
Soon after, a teenage boy opened the door to the residence. Police said the boy appeared to be drunk; he said he was not the homeowner and wandered back into the house, leaving the door open. The officer yelled into the home, asking if anyone needed help.
Police could hear the voices of other people inside the home and someone shouted for the others to close the door. Meanwhile, additional police officers went around the back of the home and found teenagers exiting through the cellar bulkhead and fleeing the area on foot. When officers went into the basement, they could allegedly smell the strong odor of marijuana and alcohol.
Police had just entered the basement when they heard a loud noise coming from the garage. Officers responded to that part of the home and found more teenagers trying to flee. Police stopped them.
Eventually, police located the homeowner inside the kitchen. She asked police why they were at the home and how they got inside.
"She said the kids were blowing off steam after the hockey game," said Chief LaCross. (The Barrington High School boys hockey team played in Game 2 of the Division II state finals on Saturday night.)
Police said the homeowner then said she was not aware of what the teenagers were doing inside the home, and asked officers to give the kids a break.
