Barrington police: Three businesses sell tobacco to minor
Most shops pass recent tobacco sales compliance check
Barrington police said three local businesses failed a tobacco sales compliance check conducted last week.
On Thursday, Oct. 11, a 16-year-old boy who was serving as a police decoy entered nine Barrington businesses and tried to purchase various tobacco products. Six of the nine shops passed the test and refused to sell to the minor. Three local businesses, however, failed the check and sold cigars and cigarettes to the teenager.
Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said the Shell gas station, BP gas station and the Regency Cigar Emporium each sold tobacco products to the 16-year-old. Chief LaCross said police issued warning notices to all three businesses who failed the compliance check.
The teenager was able to purchase a cigarillo from the Shell gas station, a pack of cigarettes from the BP gas station, and cigar from the Regency Cigar Emporium.
