Barrington police played a key role in bringing an alleged car thief to justice on Sunday, Sept. 20.
The local department received a call from Providence police just after midnight, alerting officers to the fact that police in Providence were following a stolen vehicle that was headed into Barrington.
Barrington police conducted a search for the car, but could not locate it. However, dispatch later informed the officers that the car in question had been spotted at the Shell gas station on County Road. Police responded to that location, and found the vehicle parked near the pumps. Police couldn't find the driver.
The department then received a call from an off-duty Bristol police officer who had spotted a man fitting the description of the driver riding a bicycle near the intersection of County Road and Sowams.
Barrington police moved to that area and found the man — James Monteiro, 33, of North Providence — riding a black bike with a white fork. Providence police warned the local officers that Mr. Monteiro may have been carrying a firearm, but a search of the individual turned up negative.
Police arrested Mr. Monteiro and turned him over to North Providence police. A Barrington police official said Mr. Monteiro may be charged with larceny of a bicycle.
