Hiding teen shows himself after officer reaches for taser

Posted

Barrington police spotted some suspicious activity taking place near the Barrington Shopping Center at about 2 a.m. on Thursday, March 10.

According to the police report, an officer noticed a vehicle pull into the shopping center parking lot and then park near the Anytime Fitness gym. The officer, who was parked across County Road near St. John's Church, waited to see if the occupant headed over to the gym, but that never happened.

The officer approached the parked car, which was empty, and spoke to a man who had just exited Anytime Fitness; that man said he did not see anyone else enter the gym while he was there.

The officer then began walking to the woods behind Shaw's Supermarket where he spotted some lights — possibly from cell phones — in the woods. The officer called for additional police, who then surrounded the area.

Police said it appeared that some teenagers were in the woods. One of the officers waited and spotted a teen who had crouched down, apparently hoping to avoid detection from the police. The officer asked for the teen to show his hands, but the young man did not move. The officer then pulled out his taser, at which point the teen revealed himself and showed his hands.

Police found three local teenagers in the woods; of the teens said they had been smoking a blunt.

No one was charged, as possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is not a criminal offense in Rhode Island.
