Two Barrington Pop Warner football teams played great defense when it mattered most, shutting down squads from Wareham, Mass. and securing victories over the weekend.

The Junior Midgets allowed two first half touchdowns, but their defense stiffened in the second half en route to a 16-12 Barrington victory. The Pee Wees, meanwhile, played a previously undefeated Wareham team to a 0-0 tie in regulation and then made a key stop on a fourth down play in overtime. Barrington's offense scored on its first play in overtime, locking up the 6-0 victory.

Junior Midgets

Barrington Pop Warner Junior Midget football team sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods played the Wareham Tigers this weekend in an exciting game for all involved.

Barrington started of slow and allowed 2 touchdowns in the first half but started to pull things together in the middle of the second quarter. The offensive team of Cam Oliveira, Mark Bernardo, Luke Gorham, Jake Murphy, Thomas Rocha, Chase White, Jack Kelleher, Aiden Keenan, Harry Masse, Willem & Wolfgang Chojnicki, and Evan Van Bree, Michael Cox, Al Prete and Collin Phillips played well.

Barrington scored a touchdown in the second quarter on a long run by Mark Bernardo. Chase White then kicked the 2 point conversion. This brought the score to Wareham 12 – Eagles 8 at the half.

In the second half, the defensive team of Robbi Sheahan, Spencer Thys, Sergio Da Silva, Justin Teles, AJ Prete, Cameron Flores, Patrick Cauley, Zach Cunha, Jack Murphy, Luke Gorham, Thomas Rocha, Mark Bernardo, Nick Ptaszek, Declan Cooke, and Cam Oliveira played great not allowing the Wareham Tigers to gain any momentum.

In the fourth quarter the Eagles offense scored a second touchdown and 2 point conversion by Mark Bernardo and Chase White making the score Eagles 16, Wareham 12. At this point the defense really started getting in full pressure on the Wareham Tigers. Defensive ends of Zach Cunha and Spencer Thys put allot of pressure on the Tigers with multiple tackles for loses. In the end the defense stopped the Tigers on fourth down with the clock running out.

Pee Wees

Barrington remained undefeated with a 6-0 victory over Wareham on Saturday.

The Eagles and Tigers played well-matched football through regulation and were forced into an overtime showdown. In the extra period, Wareham started first with the ball and faced a fourth and goal at the four yard line. The Eagles' defense swarmed to the Tigers' ballcarrier on fourth down, stopping him just inches short of the goal-line.

Barrington celebrated the stop and a few minutes later reveled in victory after Brigham Dunphy took a hand-off from Jax Gorman and plowed 10 yards to the end zone, barreling through a Wareham defensive back at the goal line.

Junior Pee Wees

The Pearson Travel Junior Pee Wee Eagles took to the field on Saturday taking on the Wareham Tigers looking to get their first win of the season. The Eagles came out of the gate swinging as they took the opening drive on a 10-play march down the field for the touchdown.

On the drive, Riley Greene rushed the ball five times for 30 yards, Ethan Hines connected with Joe Medeiros on a 15-yard pass play and Hines also added three runs of his own for 15 yards. The drive was capped off when Greene was able to bounce off tackle for a 6-yard touchdown run behind key blocks from Danny Lemos, Nolan Gaus, Josh Diorio, and Owen Lawson. The extra point was completed on another pass from Hines to Medeiros.

On the other side of the ball the Eagles defense was stout much of the first half. Multiple tackles from Joe Mederios, Nathan Cobery, Adam Camille, Ben Ptasek, and Riley Greene led the Eagles to a 7-7 halftime score.

The game remained 7-7 into the fourth quarter with a defensive battle taking place and neither team having the ability to effectively move the ball. The Eagles gave up the final touchdown a few minutes into the fourth quarter falling behind 14-7.

As the game was winding down and the Tigers were driving looking to close out the game the Eagles defense stepped up once again with a forced fumble by Ian McTaggart which was recovered by Riley Greene.

The offense went to work looking to put together a game tying drive. Runs by Medeiros and Ptasek behind blocks from Chris DeSisto, Aidan Pine and Evan Waite gave the Eagles slight momentum but were unfortunately unable to take the ball into the end zone.

The drive fizzled out and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs which allowed the Tigers to take a knee and run out the clock to end the game at 14-7.

The Eagles will take on the Middletown Islanders next Sunday.

Mighty Mites

Barrington traveled to Fairhaven, Mass. to play against a tough Middletown Islanders Blue team on Sunday.

The Eagles trailed 7-0 at halftime against Middletown, but a few defensive breakdowns in the second half allowed the Islanders to pull out a 29-6 victory.

Barrington's offense moved the ball well from the opening kickoff, as quarterback Mitchell Ivatts broke off long runs against the always-tough Islanders. Barrington came up just short on a key fourth down play and Middletown took over.

The Islanders' quarterback proved very difficult to stop, as he broke away from what appeared to be a big tackle for a loss by Barrington and instead ran deep into the Eagles' end of the field. The Islanders scored a few plays later, but only after huge tackles by Brett White, Quinn Murphy and Owen Willard. Kurt Donnecker, Kevin Robinson, AJ DiOrio and Ivatts also played very on defense.

Middletown pushed ahead to 15-0 in the first half, but the Eagles cut into the lead when Ivatts scrambled to his left, broke a tackle and scampered 40 yards for a touchdown.

Injuries in the second half left some players for Barrington trying out new positions. Despite the personnel shifts, Barrington's youngest football team played well and refused to back down against the undefeated Islanders, who capitalized on two long runs in the second half.

The Eagles will look to rebound on Sunday morning when they travel to Middletown to play the Islanders' White team at 9 a.m.
