Chip Hawkins and Caneel capture four first place finishes

Barrington's Chip Hawkins, a long-standing member and past commodore of the Barrington Yacht Club, recently defended his non-spinnaker crown at Edgartown Race Weekend.

The Race Weekend celebrated its 80th season, and is hosted annually by the Edgartown Yacht Club. The regatta features two days of buoy racing followed by a competitive ‘Round the Island Race." The race around Martha's Vineyard is one of America’s oldest distance races. The race is 56 nautical miles (65 miles) and is only a few miles longer than the Isle of Wight Race in England. The race around Martha's Vineyard passes seven lighthouses and is sailed in Vineyard Sound, Nantucket Sound and in the open Atlantic.

Mr. Hawkins, aboard his C&C41 Caneel, won the class for buoy racing with four firsts, and then won the class for the “'Round-the-Island” in perfect conditions with a strong easterly breeze, and challenging seas.

“We got the boat going really well, and were dialed in for some great speed,” said Mr. Hawkins.

Caneel won her class all days, and was the fastest boat around the island on corrected time by a significant measure. In addition to her Class victory, Caneel was awarded The Metcalf Trophy, The Upbeat Cup and The Commodores' Concord Cup for being the best overall finisher.

Onboard crewing with Mr. Hawkins was his wife Susan Hawkins, along with Dave McGill, Jay Schryver, Chris Robertson, Jim Hutzler, and John Ratcliffe, all members of The Barrington Yacht Club.
