Barrington routes to schools getting safer

Improvements planned for middle school, Primrose Hill; meeting tonight

The public is invited to a special meeting tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 28, discussing Safe Routes to School projects in town.

The meeting will be held at Primrose Hill School at 7 p.m., and will focus on the improvement of conditions for walking and biking to Barrington Middle School and Primrose Hill School.

Rhode Island Department of Transportation staff and engineering consultants will present information and answer questions about the project, which is moving into the final plan stage. Construction is scheduled to start this fall.

Primrose Hill Elementary School work:

• Approximately 2,000 feet of sidewalk on Middle Highway (new/rebuilt) — from St. Andrew's Farm to Sherwood Lane 

• Sixteen new pedestrian ramps

• Seven new crosswalks

• Bike racks

Barrington Middle School work:

• Approximately 1,100 feet of sidewalk on Middle Highway — from East Bay Bike Path to Seven Oaks Drive

• Six new pedestrian ramps 

• Four new crosswalks

• Bike racks

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
