Barrington school district begins building strategic plan

Process will include focus group sessions starting in October

Posted

Work is underway on crafting the school district's next strategic plan.

Earlier this month, the Barrington Public Schools Strategic Plan Steering Committee met and reviewed high-level data on the district’s student achievement, workforce engagement, service to parents and the community, and financial operations.

"Data analysis and deeper conversations around these priority areas will continue in the coming months," stated a press release from the superintendent's office.

Dr. Melissa Matarazzo, a representative from Studer Education, the firm hired to help facilitate the process, led the recent meeting. She detailed the strategic planning process and "provided guidance regarding the creation of broader opportunities for all stakeholders to contribute to the collective vision of future success."

Part of the process will include one-hour focus group sessions. Starting in October, members of the community will be invited to participate in the focus groups — every session will be guided by the same set of questions.

There will be also be an anonymous online survey to all parents and employees of the school district. The survey will be emailed out on Sept. 18 and will remain open until Oct. 4. The steering committee will review survey feedback during its Nov. 9 meeting.

The next steering committee meet is planned for Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Barrington High School library. The meetings are open to the public.

"The strategic plan, resulting from the work of this committee, will focus the work of Barrington Public Schools and support the School Committee, District leaders, and all community stakeholders in making the best decisions to achieve our shared mission, 'empowering all students to excel,'" stated the release.

In June, more than 70 volunteers — from outside the school department and within the district — expressed interest in participating on the committee. "A district team that included Superintendent Michael B. Messore III, School Committee Chair Kate D. Brody, School Committee member Gina M. Pine, Barrington High School Principal Joseph Hurley, and Studer Education Facilitator, Dr. Melissa Matarazzo participated in a blind scoring process to ensure a careful and objective selection process for the population of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee," stated the release.
