Barrington's Jason Scanlon will enter state tennis tournament as the top seeded player

The Barrington High School boys' tennis team defeated Cumberland 7-0 on Monday, putting a shine on the Senior Day celebration.

The Eagles' top singles player, senior Jason Scanlon, won in straight sets over Oliver Doyle, 6-1, 6-1, and remained undefeated this season. With a record of 12-0 and strong wins all season, Jason will enter the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Individual State Tennis Tournament this weekend as the number one seed.

Barrington coach Marvin Gordon said Jason has been able to raise the level of play from all his teammates.

"It's great to have him on the team," said Mr. Gordon. "He works very hard. He's very motivated. And he's a really good kid."

Against Cumberland, Scanlon's win at number one singles was followed by Ian Mellen's 6-2, 6-1 victory at number two singles. Story Salit won in straight sets at third singles and Conor Mc Gartoll won 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles.

The Eagles' top doubles team also played very well on Monday, as seniors Daniel Grover and Alex Lisoukov won 6-1, 6-3.

Monday's victory followed a tough 6-1 loss to South Kingstown. Scanlon celebrated Barrington's lone win.

The state individual tournament starts Friday at 3 p.m. and runs through Sunday. The matches will be played at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

Scanlon may face the second seeded Zach Johnson, from East Greenwich, in the state tournament. The two played for the state title last year, with Johnson coming away the winner. This year, Jason has twice defeated Zach — 6-4, 6-0 the first time they played, and 6-4, 6-4 more recently.

"They're very good," said Mr. Gordon. "It's like watching the pros out there."

The state team tournament will be played Friday through Monday, May 27 to 30.
