Barrington team reaches doubles finals

Abigail and Jillian Walter are runners-up at state tennis tournament

Posted

A handful of Barrington High School tennis team members competed in the Rhode Island State Singles and Doubles Tournament last weekend.

The Eagles' top doubles team of Abigail and Jillian Walter reached the finals of the doubles bracket. The local girls won their first three matches of the tournament and squared off against a tough team from LaSalle in the finals. Despite a great effort, the Barrington team came up short in the finals.

Barrington's doubles team of Alexis Brenner and Lauren Jay also played well in the tournament. Brenner and Jay upset the top-seeded team from East Greenwich in the quarterfinals, winning in three sets. The victory propelled Brenner and Jay into the semifinals, where they eventually lost to the same LaSalle team that captured the state title.

In singles competition, Barrington's number one player, freshman Caroline Maher, won her first round match and then lost to a LaSalle player in the second round. It was a similar situation for Barrington sophomore Beth Wang, who won her first round match but lost in the second round. Senior Hope Robertson also qualified for the state tournament, but had to withdraw from competition due to illness.

Regular season

The Eagles wrapped up their regular season scheduled with a 7-0 win over Moses Brown on Thursday, Oct. 19. It was also Senior Day for the team. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, Barrington lost a close match 4-3 to Wheeler.

Barrington finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and earned the second seed in the upcoming Division One team tennis tournament. Barrington received a first-round bye and will a semifinals match on Thursday at Slater Park in Pawtucket at 3 p.m.
