Barrington three-peats as debate state champs

State tournament features all-Barrington final

Posted

For the third year in a row, the Barrington High School debate team won the state championship.

At the state championship tournament, the first- and second-place varsity awards are determined by the outcome of a final debate round between the two top-scoring teams. And once again, the tournament featured an all-Barrington final.

After a debate about happiness as the ultimate goal in life, the team of Henry Johnson and Sam Turner were awarded first place, while Lorelei Alverson and Nina Polumbo took home second-place honors.

Rounding out the top 10 were Emily Sancomb and Lexi Anderson (#4), Andrew Gerstenblatt and Alivia Lanoue (#5), Maya Striuli and Jared Jageler (#8), Daniel Sheinberg and Jonny Zhang (#9), and Gabrielle Ellicott and Emily Gorman (#10).

Barrington also won four of the top five individual varsity speaker awards: Alivia Lanoue (#2), Emily Sancomb (#3), Lorelei Alverson (#4), and Sam Turner (#5).

The following varsity speakers were also recognized (placing in the top 25 percent): Maya Striuli, Henry Johnson, Jack DeLuca, Taryn deMeillon, Gabrielle Ellicott, Ellie Wind, Nina Polumbo, Juncheng Quan, and Jonny Zhang.

The novice team also did well. The team of Aryana Mohammadi and Wyatt Boone won first place; Aryanna was also the top novice individual speaker.

Many other Barrington novices were also recognized. Wyatt Boone and Kate deMeillon were among the top 10 speakers, while the teams of Harry Dunn and Lucian Fairbrother, and Liza Zhukov and Noelle Faiza also placed in the top ten.

The tournament was held at Roger Williams University on Saturday.
