BHS boys have won last three weight throw national titles

Posted

Last weekend, Barrington High School's Bobby Colantonio picked up where his former teammate Adam Kelly left off, capturing the New Balance Nationals Indoors weight throw championship title.

Kelly, who is a freshman weight thrower at Princeton University this year, won the national weight throw title in 2014 and 2015. This year, Colantonio, a senior at Barrington High School, brought home the NBNI weight throw championship and earned the title "All American."

Colantonio, who has already committed to attend the University of Alabama this fall, tossed the weight 81 feet, 5.75 inches. The throw was nearly four feet longer than that of the second place finisher, and also edged out Kelly's top throw in 2015. The former BHS thrower had a distance of 81 feet, 5.25 inches.

The nationals were held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City.

Colantonio was followed by Georgia's Isaiah Rogers in second place, and Ohio's Jacob Wickey in third, Nick Lane in fourth and Brent Fairbanks in fifth.

Barrington also had some female athletes competing at nationals. Barrington's sprint medley relay team of Briana Gausland, Erin Abbott, and Julia and Katie Zitzmann powered to a 14th place finish with a time of 4:12.33.

Emerging Elites

Colantonio's current high school teammate, Mars Bishop, competed in the mile event during the Emerging Elite category. Bishop pushed to a fifth place finish, crossing the line with a time of 4:18.9, which is equivalent to a 3:59.4 in the 1,500 meters.

In the Emerging Elite category for the girls, Barrington celebrated three girls competing in the weight throw.

Annika Kelly finished 12th, with a distance of 42 feet, 8.25 inches, while Faith Polando was 17th with a distance of 41 feet, 10.5 inches, and Sydney Polando was 30th with a distance of 39 feet, 3 inches.
