Barrington weight thrower is New England champion

Barrington High School's Bobby Colantonio set a meet and facility record at the New England High School Weight Throw Championships on Tuesday, March 1.

While competing in the 35-pound weight throw at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, Colantonio uncorked a throw of 61 feet, 9.5 inches, smashing the previous mark of 57 feet, 11.5 inches set in 2014. Colantonio's throw was nearly 10 feet better than the second place finisher.

To lend some perspective, Colantonio's throw in the 35-pound event would have landed him a top five finish in this year's Ivy League Heptagonal Championship meet.

In addition to winning the 35-pound weight throw at New Englands, the Barrington boy also captured top honors in the 25-pound weight throw event. Colantonio, who will compete for the University of Alabama next year, had a throw of 77 feet, 11.5 inches in the 25-pound event. His throw was more than 10 feet better than the second place throw and was less than two feet off the meet record. (The state record of 83 feet, 3.25 inches belongs to former Barrington High School thrower Adam Kelly, who now competes at Princeton University.)

Colantonio will next compete at the New Balance Nationals Indoor (NBNI) at The Armory in New York City on March 13.

Top 10 girls' finish

Barrington High School freshman Annika Kelly had a personal best throw of 45 feet, 10 inches and captured 10th place at the New England Championships on Tuesday, March 1.

Kelly's teammates Faith and Sydney Polando also performed well at New Englands. Faith finished in 18th with a throw of 41 feet, 10.75 inches, while Sydney was 22nd with a throw of 39 feet, 10.25 inches.

Barrington High School throwing coach Bob Gourley said all three girls will compete at the NBNI Girls Emerging Elite Weight Throw at The Armory on Friday, March 11, and in the 15-16 Girls Weight Throw in the USATF Hershey Indoor Championships in Staten Island, NY, on March 12.
