Barrington will have special election for school committee post

Barrington residents will be asked to cast votes for a new school committee member at a special election on Tuesday, Dec. 15. The school board vacancy was created when Paula Dominguez resigned her position prior to finishing the term.

"My new position as Director of Assessment and Accreditation for the Lynch School of Education at Boston College means that I have to move out of Barrington before the end of my tenure on the school committee," she wrote in her resignation letter.

It is likely that public schools will be closed on Dec. 15 to accommodate the special election, as all five polling places — the high school, middle school, Hampden Meadows School, Nayatt and Sowams — must be open for voting.

Should there need to be a primary for the special election, it would take place on Nov. 10. The school department reportedly has an in-service day scheduled for that day, meaning students will not be going to school that day.

Anyone interested in running for the school committee vacancy must file a declaration of candidacy on Oct. 1 or 2 — the deadline is 4 p.m. on Oct. 2 — at the town clerk's office in the town hall. The forms will be made available starting today, Sept. 23.
