Barrington hosted and won the first-ever Rhode Island State Ultimate Frisbee Championship for high schools on Sunday, May 29 at Chianese Field.

This event marked the first time there were enough Ultimate Frisbee teams in the state to conduct a championship tournament.

Participating in the tournament were teams from Barrington High, Blackstone Valley Prep, Classical High School and East Greenwich High School. Also playing were teams from Middleboro, Mass. and Abington, Mass., teams invited to play in the Rhode Island championship because the Massachusetts championship conflicted with their school’s graduation.

The strong Barrington team powered through the tournament, in pool play defeating Classical 11-0, Middleboro 9-2 and East Greenwich 11-5.

In the championship game, Barrington defeated runner-up East Greenwich 13-4.

The team is bolstered by three stand-out players — sophomore Kyle Webb and juniors Jonathan Lewis and Troy Prebenda.

"This championship was a fitting climax to the high school careers of seniors Vincent Portelli and Sam Whitman, who will be missed on the starting line," wrote coach Matt Stein in a recent email. "Only losing two players to graduation, the Barrington Ultimate Frisbee team is looking forward to another strong year next year."
