Barrington's 'Fraid Knots' pedal hard for charity

A number of Barrington residents saddled up for this year's Pan Mass Challenge as members of Fraid Knots, a team that raised more than $40,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The Fraid Knots included Barrington residents Dave Bowerman, David Cambria, Kedrik Knight, Tony Moscrop, Mike Reuter, Bear Marchal, Andrew Naperotic, Chip Wilkerson and Garrett Ames.

Inspiration for the Fraid Knots comes in the form of Charlie Ames (son of Garrett).

"Charlie is known by most people in our little Rhode Island town," stated a fund-raising page for the Fraid Knots. "He is a quick, determined and sweet kid. He has a boundless energy and curiosity about him. He has striking blue eyes and surfer-cool blonde hair. He is wise beyond his years. His favorite song 'I’m not afraid' is our anthem. Three years ago Charlie faced down a challenging brain tumor that no person, child or adult, should have to endure. True to his theme song Charlie did miraculously well with his brain surgery and follow up year of cancer treatment. Today he is cancer free! With more energy than ever he tears it up playing hockey and lacrosse. He rides his bike to school, loves music and is a very bright young boy. He is fearless and continues to inspire our team."

The PMC began in 1980 and has grown into an event that includes 6,000 cyclists from 41 states and eight countries. The PMC has contributed $455 million to cancer research during the past 35 years.

This year, the Fraid Knots raised more than $40,000 with help from a number of Barrington residents and businesses, including YoGo Crazy, Grapes and Grains, Blue Water Grill, Fuel Belt, and Cranesbill Nursery.

"In riding we celebrate those we know who have benefited from successful surgeries and treatments, we extend hope to those we know facing cancer today, and we honor the memory of those we've lost to the disease," stated the Fraid Knots' page. "Most importantly we ride to support a cure!"
