The Barrington High School Unified basketball team and girls’ fast-pitch softball squad, both state champions in their respective divisions this past spring, were awarded championship jackets and plaques during a special ceremony under the direction of the Barrington Boosters Club and Barrington High School Director of Athletics and Student Activities George Finn last Wednesday night in the high school library.
It was a joyous occasion for both teams, whose efforts continued to make Barrington High one of the most successful and respected athletic programs in the state.
Looking back on this past spring’s campaign, Unified head basketball coach Mike Topazio, who also coaches the highly-successful Barrington Middle School girls’ basketball team, knew exactly what he had to continue to make the Eagles a competitive group.
“We had 29 players, including partners, so we had to first figure out a way to get 29 players in a game equally and stay competitive,” he explained. “With help from assistant coach Corey Aguiar, we were able to figure out the best possible rotation. Remember, that most teams only had like 12 to 15 players, so they were able to keep their better players in for far more minutes.
“But again, winning wasn’t the big priority,” he insisted. “Having fun was, and boy, we did...all the way to a Division 4 state title.”
Sandy Gorham, who is used to winning state titles, both here and formally at East Providence High School, had a great group of kids to work with on the softball team, and the results were very gratifying. Winning the Division 2 state crown was the icing on the cake.
“After working through a couple of lean years, it was a joy to work with this group of girls for the last 3 years,” said Coach Gorham. “This year, we battled multiple injuries during the beginning and middle part of the season and got healthy at the right time. Through outstanding defense and great pitching by Paige Concannon, we were able to beat Mount St. Charles for the championship.”
