Bayside YMCA swimmers finish 11th at regionals

Two local swimmers competing at nationals this week

Ethan O’Connor and Aidan Lane, swimmers on the Bayside YMCA team, are in Greensboro, NC this week to represent their in this year’s YMCA National Championships.  

The national meet, which takes place between April 4 and 8, gathers top tier swimmers from around the country to compete for national titles. Ethan and Aidan earned the privilege to compete in this year’s national meet because of their strong performances this season, especially at the New England Championships, which took place last month at MIT in Boston.  

At the New England Championships, 40 swimmers from the Bayside YMCA competed in team and individual events. The team experienced great success, as it placed 11th out of more than 75 teams from across the region.

Team and individual accomplishments are listed below:

8&under boys — Connor Curran, Jared Lesk, Graham Bennett, Montgomery Gantz — placed seventh overall

• 11-12 boys — Luke Gorham, Will Sanchez, Kellan Lane, Georgie Alexandre, Zack O’Connor, Charlie Ragona, Colby Snow, Lucas Jauregui — placed fourth overall

• Ethan O’Connor broke the New England meet record by placing first in the 13-14 age 200 free with a time of 1:45.84. Ethan also placed second in the 100 back

• Jared Lesk placed sixth in 8&under 25 fly (17.84), 7th in 100 IM (1:31.22), and 10th in 25 back (19:55)

• The 100 free relay (Connor, Jared, Graham, Montgomery) placed fourth

• Kristen Baker placed seventh in 50 back (36.25) and 10th in 50 breaststroke (41.20)

• The 200 Free Relay — Kristen Baker, Nellie Peecher, Abby Butlin, and Charlotte Danyla — placed 10th

• Emma DiGiacomo placed ninth in 50 free (27.59)

• Rachel Baker broke the previous Bayside team record and placed fourth in 50 back (30.92). She also placed 10th in 50 free (27.70)

• The relay team of Emma, Rachel, Reilly Curran, and Zoe Webster placed eighth in the 200 free relay

• Luke Gorham placed sixth in 100 free (57.10), sixth in 50 free (26.02), and 10th in 50 breast (35.11)

• Will Sanchez placed fifth in 50 back (30.41) and seventh in 50 free (26.72)

• Kellan Lane placed sixth in 100 back (1:06.43) and ninth in 50 back (30.77) 

• The 200 Free and 200 Medley Relay teams both placed fifth and were made up by Luke, Kellan, Will, and Georgie Alexandre

• Julie Zulker placed eighth in the 13 & 14 girls 50 free (25.85)

• Ben Vesey placed fourth in the 15 & over boys 500 free (4:59.59) and seventh in 200 IM (2:03.09)

• Maddy Paine finished eighth in the 15 & over girls 50 free (25.41) and eighth in 100 free (54.91)

• Alicia Vesey placed 10th in the 15 & over girls 500 free (5:37.00)

Overall, the effort put in by the entire Bayside Swim team was extraordinary, and the hard work of the team substantiated to high achievement.
