The Bayside YMCA swim team, the Stingrays, won the SENECY swim league regional championship meet for the fourth year in a row at Boston University in early March.

The SENECY swim league is comprised of 17 different YMCA swim teams from across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The Stingrays, which includes 145 swimmers, brought back seven first-place wins and broke longstanding records.

Most notably, the Stingrays' 15 and over boys team broke the SENECY record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.17. The team included Andrew Barton, Gor Bagumyan, Ethan O'Connor, all of Barrington, and Yanis Benadouda of East Providence.

O'Connor also broke the SENECY record for the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 51.68 seconds.

The Stingrays also broke three Bayside YMCA records including O'Connor in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 46.42 seconds. Rachel Baker, of Barrington, broke the record for the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25.13 seconds. The 15-and-over girls medley relay team of Melanie and Rachel Baker, Raissa Lau of East Providence and Juliana Goncalves, of nearby Rehoboth, Mass., set a Bayside record with a time of 1:52.51.

According to head coach Jen Baker, "Winning this year exemplifies to us that how we are running our program is truly working. Anytime you win a championship it is unbelievable, but to do it for four years consecutively is just unthinkable."

Co-head coach Brian Baker added: "It has been so nice to see them grow, not only as a swimmers, but also as people. We understand as coaches that we are just not coaching a kid who can swim, but are helping them to cope with their failures and handle their successes. We have helped them with their senior projects, served as references on job applications, and wrote to college coaches on their behalf. We are invested in these athletes as if they were our own children.”
