The Barrington High School Stagemasters will be performing their spring production of "Unfinished Business" on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 6, 7 and 8. All performances will be in the Barrington High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.
"Unfinished Business" is the story of seven teenagers who decide to explore the Remington Mansion — rumored to be haunted — instead of working on their history project. There they meet the resident ghosts of the mansion and an adventure that started out as a dare turns into a race to solve the mystery of "who killed Victoria Remington?"
The play employs some fun special effects that technical theater students have learned on the Stagemasters annual behind the scenes field trip to Halloween attractions. Lighting and animatronics are used to create the haunted house atmosphere.
The show also includes original music and sound effects by student Dylan Monti, who will be majoring in music production next year at college. Dylan created theme songs for individual characters as well as music for set changes and sound effects for the haunted house.
"It was a lot of fun creating music for each of the characters," Dylan said. "I tried to explore the simplicity of a single melody, working primarily with just piano. The sound effects were actually a bit more difficult. My mom thought I was losing my mind upon hearing me stomping around my house repeatedly slamming doors. This was definitely unlike anything else I've ever recorded, but I was happy to do it!"
"Unfinished Business" includes several faculty performance and provides a unique opportunity for both students and teachers to work together as cast-mates.
"Working with the the teachers has been really enjoyable and entertaining," said Camille Ivory, who plays one of the teenagers that explores Remington Mansion. "Most of them have never done anything like this so it is has been fun to teach them theatre vocabulary and show them what they can do to improve."
Members of the English and History departments act alongside student actors with a different teacher performing every night. Stacey Siravo-Bazin performs Thursday, Allison Grieco takes the stage on Friday and Steven Pickford makes his acting debut on Saturday.
Student roles are also shared, allowing younger students to learn from their older counterparts. Most notably sisters Libby and Natalie Tisler, who split the role of Cordelia, a ghost haunting Remington Mansion. Libby is a senior and Natalie is a sophomore at the high school.
Libby is very excited to share the role with her sister, saying that being "able to participate in Stagemasters with my sister Natalie has been a great experience and has brought us even closer. Sharing the part of Cordelia has been so much fun! We have a great time rehearsing and can't wait to watch each other perform this role! It is a great way to finish out my time with Stagemasters."
Although the show is set in a haunted Mansion, the play is a comedy, but as the subject matter includes murder, ghosts and the supernatural, parental discretion is advised for younger children. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.
