Two Eagles wrestle to first place finishes

The Barrington High School wrestling team battled to a second place finish at the Griswold Wrestling Tournament in Griswold, Conn. last weekend. 

A total of 17 teams from across two states — four teams from Rhode Island and 13 teams from Connecticut — competed in the tournament. 

At the end of the event, Barrington had nine out of its 14 wrestlers place at the tournament. The Eagles finished with 189 team points, just behind first-place Avon (Conn.) Stratford (Conn.) was third with 166.5 points, and Toll Gate was fourth with 166 points. 

Barrington had two wrestlers finish atop their respective weight classes. Freshman grappler Caleb Appleyard, competing in the 144-pound weight class, finished first. And junior wrestler Matt Zimmerman won top honors in the 215-pound weight class. 

Barrington High School sophomore James Rocco finished second in the 157-pound weight class, while Eagles’ junior Connor Foley battled to a second-place finish in the 150-pound weight class. 

Junior Brandon Medeiros finished fourth in the 190-pound weight class, and junior Jackson Cortese was fourth at 175 pounds. Sophomore Nate Gravelle, competing in the heavyweight division, finished fourth.

Sophomore Gianni DiGioa finished fifth in the 165-pound weight class, and sophomore Logan Lane was fifth at 138 pounds.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
