Barrington High School senior Maile Somera recently received the Honorable Monsignor Robert Newbold Scholarship Award as the RIIL Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

The Rhode Island Interscholastic League honored Maile and others during a special event on Wednesday, April 10.

The three-time Gatorade R.I. Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, Maile finished her high school volleyball career with 1,387 kills and more than 800 digs. This year she led the Eagles to the Division I-A regular season title and a runner-up finish to North Kingstown in the Division I Championship.

Barrington High School volleyball coach Ron Enos has praised Maile's contributions to the program over the years. In a prior interview, Mr. Enos said: "In addition to her tremendous skill sets and all the intangibles she possesses, Maile has always been a great teammate."

The RIIL award recognizes Maile's respect and sportsmanship to her coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, and fans alike.

She is also an exceptional student with highest honors and will continue her academic and athletic career at Yale University in the fall.
