Bomb squad and police investigate old shoe in Bristol

Posted

A cleaning crew working in a recently-vacated apartment in Bristol called police after finding a suspicious item during their cleanout Saturday evening — a shoe with a wire sticking out of the sole.

Following protocols, Bristol Police contacted the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's Office, which responded with units, including the state police Bomb Squad. The scene on Congregational Street looked instense, with the road blocked, Bristol police cruisers, state police, the bomb squad and police dogs.

After a brief investigation, they had their answer. The shoe was a worn-out, light-up sneaker. Bristol Police Capt. Brian Burke did not know the brand of sneaker, but said, "They were commercially manufactured, light-up sneakers."

Rumors about what took place on Congregational Street included reports that bodies had been removed from the apartment. Monday morning, Capt. Burke said he had been called by all three of Rhode Island's major network TV news stations, but he assured them all there were no bodies — just some old shoes.
