Boy falls out of a truck on Rumstick Road

Police ticket driver for two violations

Posted

A 13-year-old Barrington boy was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck late Wednesday night, July 4.

Police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Rumstick Road and Ferry Lane after receiving a 911 call at about 11:20 p.m.

When they arrived, police officers and firefighters found the 13-year-old boy laying on the ground; he had apparently suffered multiple cuts and was screaming that he thought he had broken his back.

Police then questioned the driver of the pickup truck and initially detected an odor of alcohol on the East Providence teenager. The boy denied having consumed any alcohol and passed a series of field sobriety tests.

However, police did allegedly find a plastic bag containing a small amount of marijuana at the scene of the accident. Police said the marijuana belonged to the 13-year-old victim.

Two witnesses told police that they heard the pickup truck's tires screech just before the boy fell from the bed of the vehicle. Police issued the East Providence boy two motor vehicle violations, including one for failing to have his passenger wear a seatbelt.

Police said that despite initially complaining of a broken back, the 13-year-old victim did not suffer any serious injuries. Police transported the boy back to his house.
