Bristol’s Pamela A. Harrop, M.D., is this year’s Woman Physician of the Year. The Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association (RIMWA) announced the award ahead of the May 16 ceremony in Providence, where Dr. Harrop will be honored as a female physician who excels in both her field of medicine and her dedication to the betterment of the community.
Dr. Harrop is a Rhode Island native who obtained her undergraduate degree from Boston College followed by a medical degree from University of Vermont Medical School. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and has since been in private practice with Medical Associates of Rhode Island on Hope Street. A Clinical Associate Professor at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine, her awards include the Rhode Island American College of Physicians Governor’s Award as well as excellence in teaching awards. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Lifespan Corporation and recently started her tenure as President of the Medical Staff at Rhode Island Hospital.
Dr. Harrop is volunteer and advisory board member at the Clinica Esperanza Free Clinic, which provides free primary care to uninsured residents through a network of volunteers. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Resource Center of Newport, which provides a number of programs and services to clients and their family members who are or have been a victim of domestic violence.
“Dr. Harrop has truly earned the title of Woman Physician of the Year and RIMWA is proud to honor her with this award,” said Jane H.Coutu of the Rhode Island Medical Society.
“We welcome all who wish to gather to celebrate her accomplishments.”
RIMWA will honor Dr. Harrop at the Marriott Providence Downtown, 1 Orms St., on May 16.
