PORTSMOUTH — A Bristol woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after her car struck another vehicle on the Mt. Hope Bridge Tuesday night, Dec. 18, police said.

Portsmouth Police identified the driver as Jennifer M. Cupolo, 44, of 38 Opechee Drive.

On Tuesday at about 6:45 p.m., officers were advised to be on the lookout for a vehicle traveling from Bristol heading toward the Mt. Hope Bridge, according to Portsmouth Detective Lt. Michael Arnold. The vehicle was a described as a red Toyota which was operating erratically in Bristol, traveling between lanes and fluctuating between various speeds, he said.

While police were en route, the Toyota struck another vehicle on the Mt. Hope Bridge and came to rest next to the span’s railing, Lt. Arnold said.

Witnesses told police that the Toyota, which was heading east, crossed the double yellow lines and struck another vehicle that was heading west on the bridge into Bristol, he said.

The operator displayed “obvious signs of intoxication” and officers observed other evidence to indicate the consumption of alcohol, he said.

Ms. Cupolo was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. No other injuries were report, police said.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the operator refused any additional testing and was released from custody with a summons to appear in 2nd District Court, Lt. Arnold said.
