Bristol firefighters battle each other instead of flames

Bristol's volunteer firefighters took a day for themselves on Saturday, July 18, when they battled each other rather than fires.

The annual Firemen's Field Day brings firefighters and their families together for friendly competition among the town's four fire companies.

Again this year, team Defiance won best overall in the muster, winning two of four events, as well as the main event, the water battle, allowing them to retain the Vollaro-Van Voast traveling trophy.

But the Hydraulion Company came out strong against their competitive colleagues. In the first event, the tug-of-war, the Hydes took first place before slipping into second for the Dry Hose and Wet event, with the Dreadnaught and Defiance companies taking first place, respectively. The traditionally strong Defiance team secured the win by beating out the competition in the final muster event, Midnight Alarm — where the teams respond to an alarm, put on their gear, deploy and connect hoses and fire a stream of water at a target.

In the water battle, Defiance won both their rounds, while the Hydes went 1-1. The Dreads took one win, while the Ever-Readys struggled, unable to place in the events.
