Bristol Little League falls just short of sweetheart championship run

Posted

Bristol’s King Philip Little League 8-year-old All Star team had an impressive run in the 22nd Andreozzi Baseball Tournament in Slater Park this August. Bristol made it to the championship game before falling to a seasoned North Providence team in a tight game, 4-3.

Bristol started the three-game round robin part of the tournament with a loss and a tie, then beat a good Cumberland team to snatch the 8th seed in the single elimination tournament. Facing the top overall seed, Barrington, the Bristol boys brought their pitching arms to play as Zachary Bento and Lorenzo Ring each hurled three innings and held Barrington to only 1 run. Beating Barrington 3-1 put Bristol in the semifinals against Portsmouth.

Bristol’s bats came alive against Portsmouth, compiling 14 hits and 14 runs putting them into their first-ever championship appearance in this tournament. Landon Vermilyea pitched 2 innings to get the save and had three hits against Portsmouth.

In the championship game, Bento and Ring held the powerful North Providence offense to 4 runs and David Wilcox led Bristol with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Though the tournament ended in a loss in the championship, these 12 boys all developed as baseball players, had fun, and built friendships along the way.
