Bristol man arrested after attacking police officer

Posted

A 21-year-old Bristol man was arrested at 1:30 in the morning last Thursday, July 16, outside his ex-girlfriend's house, after allegedly fighting with police officers, screaming obscenities and demanding the officers watch a video he posted to Facebook.

Police were initially called to the cul de sac on Kevin Court for a report of a man sitting inside a red pickup truck playing music loudly at 1:36 a.m.

According to reports, Officer Barry Carinha was first on the scene. When he arrived, Brent Flannery, 21, of 74 Oliver St., stepped out of the truck and approached the officer. Mr. Flannery's ex-girlfriend was standing outside the truck, on the passenger side.

According to Officer Carinha, when Mr. Flannery was ordered to stop, he put his arms over his head and yelled things like, "I am not armed," "I pay your salary" and "I don't consent to any search."

When Officer Kyle Batista arrived on scene, Mr. Flannery allegedly approached him and both tried to hug the officer, and yelled at him. Among other things, he yelled, "Your were supposed to watch the video I posted on Facebook." Officers were not able to find a valid Facebook account for Mr. Flannery.

Mr. Flannery initially calmed down, and while Officer Carinha was talking to the ex-girlfriend, Officer Batista stayed with Mr. Flannery in the street. That turned heated when Mr. Flannery assumed a fighting stance and allegedly grabbed the officer's throat and tried to choke him. Officer Batista brought him to the ground, while Officer Carinha ran over to help.

Before Officer Carinha got there, Mr. Flannery allegedly punched Officer Batista numerous times in the midsection. The two officers got him onto his stomach, but he allegedly kept kicking them and resisting arrest. They finally used pepper spray before getting him into handcuffs.

He was charged with resisting arrest, simple assault and disorderly conduct, and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation.
