Bristol Police: IRS fraud, bag full of copper, suspicious activity

The Bristol Police Department responded to the following calls between March 20 and March 26:

Monday, March 20

Officers responded to reports of two scam attempts, one involving IRS fraud, which is not uncommon during tax season, and something for which residents should be on the lookout.

Officers assisted with a car fire on Bay View Avenue just after 3 p.m., which fire personnel quickly got under control.

Bristol arrests: Attempted break-in, larceny, and more

Tuesday, March 21

An unknown man was reportedly chasing another man at Hope and State streets around 1:30 p.m. The potential victim got away and reported the suspicious incident to police.

A resident called police because while walking his dogs on Tower Street at 2:30 p.m., he came upon two cars parked on the street and could hear voices in the woods off the road. The two cars were there, but there were no voices from the woods when police arrived. There was no further investigation needed.

A bed was reportedly stolen from a home on State Street around 6:30 p.m. Police are investigating.

A resident was reportedly burning yard waste on Dewold Avenue around 7 p.m. The fire was extinguished.

Two people were reportedly soliciting door-to-door on King Philip Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. Officers advised them to register at Town Hall the next morning.

A resident on Siegel Street complained of loud music coming from a black SUV parked in front of a neighbor’s home. Police advised the driver to turn the music down.

Wednesday, March 22

A vandal reportedly damaged a tree, picnic table and a fence at a home on Chestnut Street around 10 a.m. Police are investigating, and have notified Warren and Portsmouth Police.

A suspicious woman with a backpack full of copper walked into a business on Broadcommon Road around 3 p.m. trying to sell the precious metal. Informed the company doesn’t buy scrap metal, the woman moved on to another company, where police met her to investigate. There were no charges filed.

Thursday, March 23

Police responded to a domestic disturbance at Colt State Park at 2 p.m. A vehicle was reportedly taken by a family member without permission. Officers found the car in the first parking lot near the entrance to the park, and transported two people to nearby bus stops. There were no charges filed.

Officers assisted with removing a reportedly disorderly woman from a home on Bourne Street but did not file charges.

Two men were reportedly taking photos at the top of the Mt. Hope Bridge just before 10 p.m. Police brought the men to the Portsmouth side. Pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge.

Friday, March 24

Officers responded to several “suspicious activity” reports on John Street just before 1 a.m., Hope Street at 1:15 a.m., Wood Street at 1:30 a.m. and State Street at 3:30 a.m. All reports were either unfounded, or officers dispersed those involved.

A “suspicious” car was reportedly parked in front of a home on Shore Road for several minutes around 7 p.m. The car was gone when police arrived.

Saturday, March 25

A woman was reportedly walking a dog on the Mt. Hope Bridge around 11:30 a.m. Police brought her to the Portsmouth side of the bridge, and she asked police to conduct a well-being check on her daughter in Warren. There was no indication why she was worried about her daughter.

Officers responded to noise complaints on Metacom Avenue at 9 p.m. and again at 10:30 p.m., and on King Philip Avenue just before midnight.

Sunday, March 26

Noise and nuisance complaints continued into the wee hours Sunday morning as police responded to Hope and John streets at 12:20 a.m., Old Ferry Road at 1:45 a.m., Franklin Street at 2 a.m. and Constitution Street at 2:20 a.m. There were no arrests made nor citations issued.

A resident reported an unknown man in a white Nissan Sentra was following him in the area of Washington and High streets. Officers checked the area but could find nothing suspicious.
