Bristol Police: Reckless drivers, 'suspicious' characters, and more

The Bristol Police Department responded to the following calls between May 8 and May 14:

Monday, May 8

An unclaimed boat was reportedly left at the end of the road on Highview Avenue in violation of town ordinances. The boat later was reported stolen out of Warren, but the report was a misunderstanding and the boat was returned to its owner.

A truck on Violet Court was reportedly taken without permission of the owner around 12:30 p.m. Police filed a report but made no arrest.

Two men were reportedly fighting at Hope and Franklin streets around 2:30 p.m. Both men boarded a RIPTA bus before police arrived.

A caller reported spotting a reckless vehicle at Metacom Avenue and Sowams Drive around 10:30 p.m., believing the driver may be drugged. Police caught up with the car on River Street, finding no issues with the driver.

Tuesday, May 9

A small flood was reported at Thames and Oliver streets around 6 p.m. The water came from an overflowing pipe that was repaired.

A Dumpster was reportedly in the road on Bradford Street at 7:30 p.m. The owner of a nearby restaurant was advised to remove the Dumpster.

Wednesday, May 10

Police responded to an accident at Metacom and Kickemuit avenues at 9 a.m. One person was brought to Rhode Island Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Officers reported town ordinance violations on Aaron Avenue for an unattached trailer, and on Hamlet Drive for a car on a jack with no rear window. Both owners were advised to remove the violations.

Officers responded to complaints of loud music on Hope Street in the downtown area at 11 p.m. There was no issue; several people were leaving the area when officers arrived.

Thursday, May 11

A tractor trailer unloading cargo on Kickemuit Avenue was blocking the road, backing up traffic just before 4 p.m. Police assisted in getting the traffic moving.

Police returned to Woodlawn Avenue for reports of an unwanted person in the home around 4 p.m. The person was removed and ordered not to return.

A caller reported a “suspicious” car driving through the Colt Avenue area. There was no problem, and no indication why the resident found the car suspicious.

Police assisted with a family dispute on Captain Street around 9:30 p.m. A caller reported his son was refusing to leave the home. Officers filed a report, but made no arrest.

Friday, May 12

A resident on St. Elizabeth Street called police because neighbors in the building were reportedly making too much noise on the stairs at 1:20 a.m. There was no police action needed.

A man reportedly urinated on the Shell gas station building on Metacom Avenue

just after 1 p.m. The man was gone when officers arrived.

A school bus driver called police when an unlisted guardian arrived to pick a child up at the bus stop. Police picked up the child’s mother and drove her to the stop to take custody of the child.

A stop sign was reportedly covered up at Hopeworth Avenue and Viking Drive. Police removed the obstruction.

Officers returned to Captain Street at 11:30 p.m. for the same reports as the night before of a resident’s son refusing to leave the home. Police filed another report, but made no arrest.

Saturday, May 13

A couple was reportedly arguing in a car on Surf Drive just after midnight. Officers responded, but determined the fight to be verbal only.

Police investigated two “suspicious” cars, one on Wood Street and another on Sullivan Lane, just after 1 a.m. In both cases, the driver was just waiting to pick up a passenger.

A resident of the Almeida Court Apartments — which are used as dorms for Roger Williams University — reported drug activity going on behind one of the buildings at 1 p.m. The report was unfounded.

Officers responded to reports of a disobedient child on Violet Court around 5:30 p.m. There was no arrest made.

Police removed an unwanted man from a convenience store on Wood Street just after 11 p.m.

Sunday, May 14

Police helped divert traffic away from Bay View Avenue after an accident there at 10:30 a.m. One person was brought to RI Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Officers responded to reports of a fight in progress join the Roger Williams University fieldhouse at 11 a.m. RWU security also responded, but no arrest was made.
