A Westport, Mass., woman is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly abusing a an elderly Bristol woman in her care.

Police were called to the home of an 88-year-old Bristol woman, whose son called to report abuse by her home health care worker after he noticed bruising on his mother that could not be explained. The woman is disabled and is unable to walk or stand, so the bruises seemed suspicious, he told police.

Officers investigated on June 14, viewing footage a video surveillance recorder the woman’s son set up. The video showed the woman’s home health care worker — Leonilde Medeiros, 59, of 7 Eddy Drive, Westport — assaulting the patient three separate times during a one-hour visit, according to reports. The police reports do not specify the specific nature of the assaults.

Bristol Police immediately obtained an arrest warrant for Ms. Medeiros, and Westport Police arrested her at her home the next day and extradited her to Bristol. She is charged with three counts of assault on a person over 60 and one count of assault on a person over 60 by a caretaker, all felonies.

Ms. Medeiros was released on bail. She is next scheduled to appear in 6th District Court on Aug. 23.
