Celebrate 'Heritage Weekend' in Barrington on June 17, 18

Tours of town planned for Saturday and Sunday

Posted

Residents and visitors are invited to Barrington's "Heritage Weekend," which will feature bus tours, walking tours and an historical exhibit at the public library.

"Heritage Weekend," which is part of the Barrington 300 celebration, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 17 and 18.

The bus tours will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 17 and from noon to 4:30 on June 18. There will be five buses touring the neighborhoods, homes and churches of Barrington, ranging from Alfred Drown to Maple Avenue, to Mathewson Road and West Barrington. Saturday's bus tours will include visits to interiors of two 18th Century homes as well as the White Church. Sunday's bus tours will include a focus on local churches.

Walking tours of Prince's Hill Cemetery will also be offered — there will be different themes highlighted in various sections of the cemetery at rotating times.

Section A is entitled "Stories Beneath the Stones," researched by Rosemary Danforth, and will feature intriguing and perhaps little known facts behind some of the more curious monuments or names. It will be offered at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m.

Section B is "Founders and Preachers" and will be presented by local genealogist and author Jeffrey Howe at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. It will detail, among other things, the early path of the founding families and the establishment of the first churches.

In Section C Richard Danforth will have photographs of a few historic plaqued homes in Barrington and will match them up to the owners who now rest  in "Home Sweet Final Home." This section will be offered at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., or 3:30. Section C also contains the impressive Civil War monument, with rows of 43 markers for the Barrington Boys in Blue who fought to preserve the Union. Actor Steven Hug will highlight in short story fashion a few of the lives of these local patriots. He begins at 11, noon, 1, 2, and 3.

Section D details "The PECK-ing Order." Patricia Keefe has outlined the story of the nine generations of the Peck family who donated the land on which stand the library, town hall and the Prince's Hill Cemetery. She will be speaking at the Peck gravesites at 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30.

People should not enter the cemetery from any of the County Road accesses but use the back parking lot area of Barrington Town Hall. Paths will be clearly marked and a program brochure will be offered at the welcome desk.

Also available will be copies of the new town publication "Barrington" in the Images of America series, and Civil War author and historian Russ Chevalier will be present with his newest book.

The bus tours will depart from the parking lot in front of the Peck Center building, allowing guests to move easily from a bus tour to the cemetery tour, and also visit the Barrington Preservation Society's museum exhibit "From Pilgrims to the Present: A Timeline of Barrington History."

People are also encouraged to take a self-guided tour through the Barrington Harbor/Mathewson Road neighborhood; Maple Avenue neighborhood or Alfred Drown neighborhood. Maps and guides for the neighborhood tours will be available at the cemetery tour sign-in table.

Folks looking for a nature-focused experience are invited to hike through Veterans Memorial Park (behind the Bayside YMCA) or the Osamequin Bird Sanctuary (on the Wampanoag Trail). Barrington Beach is also open for the season.
