Charlotte Smith, Tiverton
Charlotte Smith of Tiverton passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017. Mrs. Smith was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of the late Della (Johnson) Newton and Charles Ferris. She graduated from Leicester High School in 1952 and Andover Institute of Technology.
Mrs. Smith was employed by Metropolitan Life as a project manager in information technology prior to her retirement in 1997. Her career in the computer industry spanned 30 years and included consulting as well as management and technical assignments. Prior to her work in the computer industry, she was employed in the electronics industry in engineering and purchasing capacities.
Mrs. Smith was an active "Ham" radio operator. She obtained her FCC Amateur Radio license in 1958 (call sign K1JEA) and, along with her husband Ken, was an active ham for 50 years. She was a life member of the Bristol County Amateur Radio Club in Fall River, an active volunteer in the Tiverton Emergency Management Communications Division and had previously served in Civil Defense Communications in Charlton, Mass. where she resided for 22 years before moving to Tiverton in 1976. She was also a member of the Charlton Grange for many years, holding several offices.
Throughout her life Mrs. Smith was an active shooter, must recently a skeet shooter as a life member of the Fall River Rod & Gun Club and a life member of the National Rifle Association. She and her husband, during their over 60 years together, were avid outdoorsmen, enjoyed fly fishing as well as fly tying, and all other types of fishing. They shared pool (billiards), bird watching, gardening and many other hobbies.
She is survived by her husband and life partner of over 60 years, Kenneth Smith, who shared their passion for life and all it's opportunities, and two nieces, Crystal Bridgeo of Kennebunk, Maine and Robin Cherry of Worcester.
