Hunters, anglers and pleasure cruisers are all invited to learn the ways of the water in a professional boating safety class designed for those who may not have time for a full, comprehensive course.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary East Bays Flotilla is offering a safe boating course on Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bristol Parks & Recreation Building, 101 Asylum Road. The eight-hour, seven-chapter course designed to appeal to hunters, anglers, personal watercraft operators and other boaters who cannot find time for a full, comprehensive course.

Boating Safely was developed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in cooperation with the U.S. Power Squadrons and Mosby Lifeline, and is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. It is also approved by most of the states that require formal instruction in order to operate a boat.

Those passing the included test will be presented a laminated card, which is required for all people, regardless of age, operating a personal water craft, including a Jet Ski, in the state. It is also mandatory for all Rhode Island boaters born after Jan 1, 1986.

Those taking the course must be 12 years of age, unless with parent and capable of passing test. The cost is $48 — $45 for the course includes text book, certificates, materials and lunch; $3 to goes to Bristol Parks and Recreation for use of the facility.
