College Achievements: Spring 2020 academic accolades for East Providence students

The following academic achievements for East Providence area college students have been submitted by their respective institutions of higher learning:

Graduation

Megan Morrow of Riverside graduated from SUNY Potsdam (N.Y.) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. The State University of New York at Potsdam recognized Morrow and the nearly 900 candidates for graduation with a special virtual commencement celebration, on Saturday, May 23.

Krystle R. Seley of Riverside was among the spring 2020 graduates from Park University (Parkville, Mo.), earning a Master of Healthcare Administration degree.

Sarah Underwood of Riverside received a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences during the 220th commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont held virtually on Thursday, May 28.

During on online celebration of the Class of 2020 at Bowdoin College (Brunswick, Maine), held May 23, 2020, bachelor of arts degrees were awarded to approximately 473 students from 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 32 other countries and territories, including Caroline Farber, of Providence, who graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a major in English and theater and a minor in Cinema studies, and Fiona Carey, of Providence, who graduated with a major in Francophone studies and a minor in theater.

Daniel DeLuca, of Riverside, was one of 522 individuals to earn a degree from Assumption at the culmination of the 2019-20 academic year. DeLuca received a bachelor's degree in Biology. On Sunday, May 10, the day on which the Class of 2020 was originally scheduled to receive their degrees at the College's 103rd Commencement, Assumption virtually celebrated the candidates for graduation and their years of commitment to academic programs.

Rachael Marie Anderson of East Providence graduated from Bristol Community College  (Massachusetts). The 2020 Commencement Ceremony originally scheduled for Saturday, May 30, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a virtual event planned for this summer. The following Seekonk residents also earned BCC degrees: Kaleigh Rae Almeida, Rhonda L. Almeida, Peter Paul D'Ambra Jr., Krystal A. DeFontes, Brennan J. Dunphy, Jonathan M. Field, Courtney Galuski, Michael Joseph Gilmore Jr., Jesse Carpenter Hall IV, Vanessa Ashlynn LeBeau, Cally Lima Barbosa, Jennifer Moore, Avry M. Mielbye, Lisa Bethany Miller, Jaime N. Morin, Dakota K. Morse, Matthew D. Mota, Michaela Jade Mulhearn, Raven P. Santos.

Dean’s/President’s List/Honor Society

Megan Wright of Riverside was named to the Dean's List at Anderson University (S.C.) for the spring semester, 2020. In order to be named to the Dean's List, a student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher for the semester.

The following local students have been named to the Dean's List for the 2020 spring semester at the University of New England (Biddeford And Portland, Maine): East Providence — Devon Aparicio, Brandon Healy, Emily Machado; Seekonk — Kaitlyn Newton, Nathan Pickett, Rachel Pion. Dean's List students have attained a grade point average of 3.3 or better out of a possible 4.0 at the end of the semester.

Joseph Rego, of Rumford, has been inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society at Becker College (Worcester/Leicester, Mass.). Rego is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. To gain entry a student must be ranked within the top 20 percentile of the freshman class and earned at least a 3.5-4.0 G.P.A.

New England Institute of Technology announced the following local students have achieved Dean's List status for the quarter ending March 14, 2020: East Providence — Michael Amaral, Caroline Gonsalves, Bianca Hawkins, Ethan Lopes, Kyle Medeiros, Stephanie Michalopoulos; Riverside — Jonathan Labrecque, Alexandra Pereira, Connor Strom. Students must achieve a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a maximum scale of 4.0 to qualify.

Allison Gower of Rumford qualified for the spring 2020 Dean's List at Belmont University (Nashville, Tenn.). Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

Jacob Cunha of East Providence has been named to the Plymouth State University Dean's List for the spring 2020 semester. To be named to the Dean's List, a student must achieve a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.69 during the spring semester and must have attempted at least 12 credit hours during the semester. Cunha is a Nursing major at Plymouth State.

Daniel DeLuca of Riverside, Class of 2020, Sydney Vilardi of Riverside, Class of 2021 and Abigail Whittum of East Providence, Class of 2021, have been named to the Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.). Dean's List for the spring 2020 semester. Students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 for a five-class, 15-credit semester to be included on the prestigious list, which is announced at the completion of the fall and spring semesters.

Kaitlyne Silva of Riverside has been named to the Plymouth State (N.H.) University President's List for the spring 2020 semester. To be named to the President's List, a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.7 or better and must have attempted at least 12 credit hours during the semester. Silva is a Nursing major at Plymouth State.

Kayla Beckler, of Rumford, has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2020 semester at Becker College (Worcester/Leicester, Mass.). Beckler is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science, Forensic Psychology Concentration. The Dean's List recognizes all full-time students (24 or more credit hours earned for the academic year; 12 minimum each semester - September through May) whose term grade point average is 3.50 or higher with no grade below a B- and no incomplete (I) or withdrawal/failing (WF) grades.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
