Letter: Councilor Edwards tried to help, scarcely deserved attack

Anyone who follows through on what he promised to do is anything but below par…

We would like to comment on a letter to the editor in the August 3 edition of the Sakonnet Times which was critical of Councilor John Edwards.

As background, prior to the July 24 Town Council Meeting, a member of our garden club was at Town Hall checking on the status of our annual budget request of $500. To her dismay, she was told that our funding had been cut along with funding for several other groups. She took it a step further and spoke with someone from the Office of the Treasurer who confirmed that the $500 had indeed been cut.

We were very disappointed to lose this funding which for years has helped to cover materials such as mulch, fertilizer, and replacement of shrubs and plants needed to maintain town gardens. These include Town Farm garden, memorials at Grinnell Beach, and plantings at Town Hall. Each December we purchase, decorate, and deliver wreaths to our various municipal offices. In addition, we purchase, plant and maintain the containers at the entrance to the Tiverton Library during the summer months.

After learning of this, we had an opportunity to bring it to the attention of Councilor Edwards. He indicated that he and others appreciate the time and effort of members of the Tiverton Garden Club to beautify the Town of Tiverton. He stated that he would follow up in the hopes of restoring our funding.

Why would anyone write such a negative letter about Councilor Edwards attacking his education and employment? It is apparent that his intent was to confirm or correct the information that we were originally given at Town Hall and, if necessary, request that the funding be restored.

We offer our sincere thanks to Councilor John Edwards for bringing this matter to the attention of the Town Council. We are very pleased with his efforts and the outcome.
